This guide will show you how to install Minecraft Java Edition worlds from zipped folders on Windows, macOS, and Linux. 🌍
Before You Begin ✅
- Ensure that Minecraft Java Edition is already installed on your computer.
- Locate your downloaded .zip world file. Example:
amazing-world.zip
- Make sure that when unzipped, the folder contains level.dat and subfolders like region/, advancements/, and data/.
- Close Minecraft before adding or editing world folders to prevent data corruption.
Windows Installation 🪟
- 📥 Download your .zip world file and save it to your computer.
- 📂 Right-click the file and select Extract All... (or use your preferred unzip tool).
- 🔍 Open the extracted folder and confirm that it contains level.dat and a region folder.
- 🗂️ Press Win + R, type
%appdata%\.minecraft\saves, and hit Enter.
- ➡️ Move the extracted world folder into the saves directory.
- 🎮 Launch Minecraft Java Edition and go to Singleplayer. Your world should now appear in the list.
macOS Installation 🍎

~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves
- ➡️ Drag and drop the extracted world folder into the saves folder.

Linux Installation 🐧
- 📥 Download the .zip file and save it anywhere you prefer.
- 📦 Extract the file using your file manager or terminal command:
unzip my-world.zip -d my-world
- 📁 Ensure the extracted folder contains level.dat and region/.
- 🗂️ Move the folder to
~/.minecraft/saves/. Example terminal command: cp -r my-world ~/.minecraft/saves/
- 🎮 Launch Minecraft Java Edition and open the world in Singleplayer.
Troubleshooting & Tips 🔧
- ❗ If your world doesn’t appear, ensure that the folder structure is correct — level.dat should be directly inside the world folder.
- 📁 Avoid having double folders (e.g.,
world/world/level.dat).
- 🕒 If your world was made in a different version of Minecraft, you may get warnings — make backups first!
- 💾 To back up a world, copy the world folder from
saves and store it elsewhere on your computer or cloud storage.
- 📤 To share a world, zip the world folder again and send it to a friend!
